The location and orientation of the existing buildings on the site created some challenges from an environment view point. To minimize the effect of the buildings east/west orientation we provided a separation between the new and existing buildings to enable us to provide some North facing windows with horizontal shading. Heat load to the east facing windows is controlled by an external verandah for the full length of the building. Classroom windows to the West side of the building have been kept to a minimum and located within window boxes to provide sun control. Windows to the Multi-Purpose Hall, whilst being floor to ceiling to provide an abundance of natural light and a desired link between indoor and outdoor spaces, have been set back from the outer face of the building over to minimize direct sun penetration during school hours.

At the Kew Primary School BER Project the current Pedagogical aim for open and flexible learning has been provided with large open spaces that are interconnected to allow easy flow between learning spaces. With the provision of large sliding doors between spaces the school is also given the ability to close off areas for times when the separation of some activities is required. Particular attention was made in the selection of the sliding door hardware to ensure ease of operation and safety.

Kew Primary School received funding from the Federal Government under their BER Scheme, economic stimulus package. As the school had specific needs they decided that a template solution would not be able to provide them with a facility that met those needs. They then approached Architectus to provide them with a building to accommodate their brief. The building consists of a Multi-Purpose hall on the Ground Level opening onto a Landscaped Amphitheatre area with feature lizard and on the upper level three double classrooms that are all capable of being interconnected as one large learning space or split into smaller more intimate learning spaces.
