The location and orientation of the existing buildings on the site created some challenges from an environment view point. To minimize the effect of the buildings east/west orientation we provided a separation between the new and existing buildings to enable us to provide some North facing windows with horizontal shading. Heat load to the east facing windows is controlled by an external verandah for the full length of the building. Classroom windows to the West side of the building have been kept to a minimum and located within window boxes to provide sun control. Windows to the Multi-Purpose Hall, whilst being floor to ceiling to provide an abundance of natural light and a desired link between indoor and outdoor spaces, have been set back from the outer face of the building over to minimize direct sun penetration during school hours.
